True Storm by L.E. Sterling
Expected Publication: May 1st 2018 by Entangled Teen
Number of pages: 400 Pages (Hardcover)

Lucy’s twin sister, Margot, may be safely back with her—but all is not well in Plague-ravaged Dominion City. The Watchers have come out of hiding, spreading chaos and death throughout the city, and suddenly Lucy finds herself under pressure to choose her future: does it lie with her handsome new friend, Alastair; her guardian, the enigmatic True Born leader Nolan Storm; or the man who makes her heart trip, her savage True Born bodyguard Jared Price?
But while Lucy ponders her path, fate has other plans. Betrayal is a cruel lesson, and the Fox sisters can hardly believe who is behind the plot against them. To survive this deadly game of politics, Lucy is forced to agree to a marriage of convenience. But is the DNA of her will stronger than the forces opposing her? Can she turn the tide against the oncoming storm??
As they say in Dominion, can rogue genes ever have a happy ending? (goodreads.com)

And now, are you ready for the excerpt...? Well, here it is:

His hands still on my face. “I’m sorry,” I manage to say, trying to control a nervous need to giggle like a hyena. “Are we fighting? Maybe I didn’t notice because it’s all we ever seem to do.”
A wicked grin lights his features. “That’s not all we seem to do,” he whispers, seconds before he replaces his thumb with his lips.
It’s a soft kiss at first, tentative. Like someone asking your name. But it lights me up, sending fire shooting through my body, heat curling through my belly. I must sigh because Jared pulls back for just a moment, a question in his eyes and hunger written all over him. Then he claims my lips again, holding my face in his hands as the earth spins away from me.

Blog Tour - Review: True North by L.E. Sterling

Freitag, 14. April 2017

Thank you so much to YA Reads for making me part of the blog tour for True North. When I saw the sign up post for this tour, and L.E. Sterling had tweeted me (and a few others) about it, I just knew I had to be part of it.

True North by L.E. Sterling
Published: April 4th 2017 by Entangled TEEN
Number of pages: 400 Pages (Hardcover)
Series: Yes, #2 in the True Born Trilogy

Abandoned by her family in Plague-ridden Dominion City, eighteen-year-old Lucy Fox has no choice but to rely upon the kindness of the True Borns, a renegade group of genetically enhanced humans, to save her twin sister, Margot. But Nolan Storm, their mysterious leader, has his own agenda. When Storm backtracks on his promise to rescue Margot, Lucy takes her fate into her own hands and sets off for Russia with her True Born bodyguard and maybe-something-more, the lethal yet beautiful Jared Price. In Russia, there's been whispered rumors of Plague Cure.
While Lucy fights her magnetic attraction to Jared, anxious that his loyalty to Storm will hurt her chances of finding her sister, they quickly discover that not all is as it appears…and discovering the secrets contained in the Fox sisters' blood before they wind up dead is just the beginning.??
As they say in Dominion, sometimes it’s not you…it’s your DNA. (goodreads.com)

* Thank you to Entangled TEEN and NetGalley for providing me
with an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion *

Ever since I read True Born last year, I was anticipating book two, curious to see how the story would continue. After reading True North I can safely say that I wasn't disappointed and that the wait was definitely worth it. Now the only problem I have is that I'd like to read book three right about now.
Since this is a second book in a trilogy I don't want to say too much so I won't spoil anything, so I'll start off by saying that I love the cover. It's just as amazing as the cover of True Born, so I can't wait to have both books on my shelves sooner or later to show them off.
Okay, let's go into plot and character thoughts but trying to stay spoiler free, of course.
I loved following Lucy throughout the story once more as she tries to find Margot and figure things about with Jared. They are amazing together and their tension is off the hooks. She remains an amazing and interesting character which makes following her and her thoughts a lot of fun once more. True North is full of mysteries and also a few answers, though leaving a lot of them still unanswered and thus the reader hooked and thirsty for more and more. The world building continued to amaze me in this one, adding more details to the world L.E. Sterling created. Also the fact that we go to Russia made me happy because I love books that play there in any sort of way.
All in all True North is a worthy successor to True Born, fast paced and amazing beginning to end. I am definitely looking forward to the final book in the series and seeing how everything ends, even if saying goodbye to this trilogy will be a sad moment.
I give True North by L.E. Sterling 5 out of 5 stars.

About the Author

I was a voracious devotee of sci-fi and fantasy novels all through my childhood, so I suppose it doesn’t come as much of a shock that I’ve returned to the genre with a vengeance.
For a while I turned my back on the genre in favour of ‘high-brow’ literary texts. Ironically, it was my doctoral degree that saw me circling back. There’s something about the way postmodern literature plays with the arcane that had me utterly fascinated, and it wasn’t long until I fell headlong back into my old ways and haven’t looked back since.
My first novel, which isn’t in the Urban Fantasy or Fantasy genres, isn’t high literature, mind you, even if it tangles with some serious statements about politics and the way our western world runs. My editor described it as something between Charles Dickens and The Catcher in the Rye: Serious Fun, in other words.
My second novel, Pluto’s Gate, is where I’ve come home to myself: it’s a contemporary retelling of the Demeter-Persephone-Pluto story from Greek mythology. Folded into the mix is a Shaman-in-training, a magical book, Underworld Gods, a world covered in ice, a three-headed dog, and one lousy ex-boyfriend.
But I’ll tell you this much: I believe in the power of words and stories to transform our inner worlds. Whether the characters be vampires or vagabonds, a good narrative sucker punches so-called reality anyhow.

The Secret to Letting Go by Katherine Fleet
Published: February 1st 2016 by Entangled Publishing
Number of Pages: 334 Pages (Paperback)
Series: No

Haunted with guilt after his girlfriend's death, Daniel Hudson has no interest in committing to anyone. At the end of the summer, he'll be leaving Florida for a new start in college. If only he could avoid the mysterious new girl in town, who seems every bit as naive and eccentric as she looks. Trouble is, she's hard to ignore, with her beautiful piercing eyes, pitiful-looking dog, and unsettling tendency of finding trouble.
Clover Scott lived her whole life off the grid and arrives on the Gulf coast in search of her grandparents. She never expected to nearly drown, or get caught in a hurricane, or fall in love with the boy who rescues her. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her life's story, to finally fit in somewhere, but Daniel wants answers about her past. When the police start asking questions about the disappearance of her parents, she must make a choice: go to jail or confess her secrets-even if they might destroy her chance at a happily-ever-after. eARC in exchange for my honest review *

The Secret to Letting Go was quite an interesting read with lots of secrets and emotions. I enjoyed it a lot, even though it took me forever to finish it, but that's due to my overwhelming reading slump.
This story follows Daniel and Clover, two very interesting and three dimensional characters. The both of them have secrets and both went through bad things in their past so reading about them meeting and slowly developing into something more was awesome.
I really enjoyed Katherine Fleet's writing style and the pace of this book. She managed to create two different voices for Daniel and Clover, which is something I love to see, and it totally helped with making me get attached to this characters and wanting to know what they are hiding and what exactly happened.
All in all The Secret of Letting Go didn't disappoint me and had a lot to offer, even though it did struggle with keeping my interest in a few tiny places. So, if you're looking for a read with lots of secrets and heartbreak then this might be for you.
I give The Secret to Letting Go by Katherine Fleet 4 out of 5 Stars.

Wake the Hollow by Gaby Triana

With the help of two very different guys—who pull at her heart in very different ways—Micaela must awaken the hidden secret of Sleepy Hollow…before she meets her mother’s fate.
   Find the answers.
Unless, of course, the answers find you first. (goodreads.com)

* Thank you to Entangled Teen for proving me with an
eARC in exchange for my honest review *

When I read the synopsis of Wake the Hollow I immediately knew I wanted to read it but unfortunately I didn't quite get what I was hoping to get from it. The biggest issue I had while reading Wake the Hollow was the definitely the fact that the story struggled to keep my attention so I found myself zoning out of not really caring about what was happening in various places, which really is a shame.
I liked Mica and the other characters, wanted to see where the story would take them, and felt majorly sorry for Mica because she lost her mother, but that's where my sympathy ends. I wanted to really get invested in everyone and root for them, but I never really did. Some of the relationships between characters felt a bit underdeveloped though and something about Dane really irked me from the start.
The mystery element of this story surrounding Mica's mother's death and the manuscript she wasn't even sure really existed was interesting enough and well written, but just not intriguing enough more often then not. Gaby Triana's writing style is good and I can see that she's a good writer, but the story unfortunately simply wasn't quite it for me.
I give Wake the Hollow by Gaby Triana 3 out of 5 stars.

True Born by L.E. Sterling
Published: May 3rd 2016 by Entangled: Teen
Number of Pages: 304 Pages (Hardcover)
Series: Yes, #1 in the True Born Trilogy

   Welcome to Dominion City.
After the great Plague descended, the world population was decimated…and their genetics damaged beyond repair.
The Lasters wait hopelessly for their genes to self-destruct. The Splicers pay for expensive treatments that might prolong their life. The plague-resistant True Borns are as mysterious as they are feared…
And then there’s Lucy Fox and her identical twin sister, Margot. After endless tests, no one wants to reveal what they are.
When Margot disappears, a desperate Lucy has no choice but to put her faith in the True Borns, led by the charismatic Nolan Storm and the beautiful but deadly Jared Price. As Lucy and the True Borns set out to rescue her sister, they stumble upon a vast conspiracy stretching from Dominion’s street preachers to shady Russian tycoons. But why target the Fox sisters?
As they say in Dominion, it’s in the blood. (goodreads.com)

* Thank you to Entangled Teen for proving me with an
eARC in exchange for my honest review *

The initial reason why I wanted to read this book was, honestly, the amazing, eye-catching cover. The second was the description. I must admit though that I went into this story worrying that it might disappoint me, turn out to be just another generic dystopian but luckily, it wasn't the case.
True Born is a dystopian showing us a point of view we usually don't get, that of two girls from a wealthy and powerful family. But it also shows the reader that even that wealth and power doesn't necessarily help Lucy to uncover secrets about herself and her twin sister. I really liked her voice and narration, following her through the story, navigating this plague-ridden world.
Besides Lucy I also really liked Jared who was a fascinating character and I absolutely loved his relation to Lucy, his personality, even though he caused a lot of aggravating moments and the fact that we didn't know, for a long time, where him and Lucy stand basically drove me crazy.
The world building was amazing, the whole plague aspect intriguing and unique, and I really cannot wait how the story will continue. L.E. Sterling has a really good writing style that I enjoyed a lot and she managed to create characters with layers and different personalities along with an amazing world. Sterling added so many interesting and complex ideas into what could've become only yet another dystopian setting, but thanks to Splicers, True Borns and Lasters, it had a unique twist that I enjoyed and appreciate so much.
I give True Born by L.E. Sterling 5 out of 5 stars.

Interview with L.E. Sterling

1 – Describe True Born with a haiku.
   How about this?
   Moody antlers rule
What the Fox twins’ blood reveals –
   The blond panther snarls.

2 – What sparked the idea for True Born? The sole idea of writing a sci-fi tale involving a apocalyptic world stricken by a plague or something completely different?
There are a few things that led to the book but the most interesting is the incredible story of my great-grandmother, who was born in England and sent to the U.S. to be an indentured servant. As the story goes, she was very young when she was shipped over, and I imagine the whole voyage was traumatic, because apparently my great-grandmother forgot her identity through the crossing. When she finally arrived in the U.S. she gave them her twin’s name. And she lived her entire life, until she was a middle-aged adult, as her twin. I loved the idea of having a bond with someone that was so close that it took over your own, so I explored this in a fictional world.

3 – What was the most challenging thing about writing True Born and which scene was the most fun to write?
I really, REALLY loved writing the action scenes – which were, of course, also among the most challenging. I wanted these scenes to seem believable and not too gory but also really kick ass. These are harder to write (and more fun) when the characters doing the ass-whooping aren’t quite human.
But now that I think about it, the thing that I really struggled with was trying to fit these really odd people, the True Borns, into a plague world where everyone else is so frail, so fallible and human.

4 – What do you like most and least about your main character, Lucy, and her sister Margot?
Ohh, great question. I adore Lucy – she’s got spunk and depths that she’s only just beginning to explore. But at the same time she’s really trapped by the thought paradigms she’s grown up with. I think that strange duality leads to some of the best tension in the book, because she’s always fighting with her desire and inclination to play it safe, play by the rules of her parents and her upper class world. In the end, she just can’t. She just isn’t that person, no matter how much she wants to be. She’s far bigger, and the world is not going to let her forget it.
As for Margot…well. Margot is a whole different problem. I don’t like that Margot is not a responsible character and continually lets Lucy hold the bag for her, so to speak. She doesn’t even seem to be aware of the privilege she has within her family – and it’s so arbitrary! Lucy is identical to Margot, after all, so why are they treated so differently?? At the same time, she needs to be free. I love that Margot seems to use all the systems she lives in against themselves to help her bust free of what she views as painful constrictions.

5 – In retrospective, is there anything that you’d change about the story or are you happy with the way it turned out in the end?
I’m extremely happy with the book! In many ways, I’d say that this book turned out much better than I could have ever imagined. It’s the most nuanced, layered, complicated, FUN book I’ve ever written.

6 – I heard the story has previously been published on Wattpad. How did you handle the transition from posting your story on there to moving over to the publishing world, getting an agent and publisher?
Funnily enough, I already had an agent when I published the story as a novella on Wattpad! I wrote the story to work the kinks out of a world that I wanted to set a whole other series of books in – the world of Dominion. And I posted it with the hopes of drawing more attention to my second novel, Pluto’s Gate, which I published with a very reputable small press – who did absolutely no marketing of the book.
But the True Born story just…really took off. The response was so completely overwhelming (the sections I posted were read 500K+ times) that I realized I’d better just finish the whole novel and see if my agent wanted to sell it.

7 - How did you feel now when thinking about the fact that in only a couple more weeks your  book will finally hit the shelves and people will able to buy and read it?
Scared. Nervous. Exhilarated. I feel a bit like the whole world is about to see me with my pants down, if you know what I mean. Publishing anything is such a vulnerable experience… and I’ve already published two books previous to True Born, so I know what of I speak!

8 – What do you think about the cover for True Born? Does it do the story justice?
I adore the cover – it’s a moody, hypnotic, symbolic cover. I love that the leader of the True Borns, Nolan Storm, has a characteristic (the antlers) that can be used to tell an interesting story on the cover. The antlers define him, certainly, but it’s what those antlers point to, his unseen qualities, that are really his power.
I can hardly wait to see what the designers do for Book 2 and 3 of the series!

9 – Do you have a writing routine or do you write whenever creativity strikes?
I get up at 5 am to write. Every day. So obviously, there’s coffee involved. I don’t have a lot of time because I have a full-time day job (and I’m a mom to a little kid) so I get pretty busy. I write in a journal before sitting down to the novel, though, because I need to empty my mind. It’s a very zen experience for me. Writing is a career for me, even if I can only get it done very part-time.

10 – What advice could you give aspiring authors?
You know, I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. The advice I would always give is to read and write as much as you can, because that teaches you everything you need to know. The other is to treat writing as a business. Learn as much as you can, learn from each and every rejection, because those will teach you far more about what you need to do than your successes.

11 – If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Do I really need to pick just one??? I think I’d have to pick immortality… it’s the one power that would allow a person to develop in so many amazing ways. Think of all the languages one could learn, the places one could travel, the books one could read and write!!

   My thoughts:

   This book sounds amazing!
I love this type of books where some kind of plague diminished the populations or some kind of virus, and the story set in the world trying to survive the aftermath of it all. Awesome, sign me up asap. The idea of identical twins and one of them having to find the other twin that disappeared sounds intriguing. Besides that I'm curious who there True Borns are and how everything will play together and the story go.
And let's face it, the cover is absolutely gorgeous, even though it's relatively simple, but I think that's the beauty of it. It definitely caught my eye when I saw its reveal on twitter some time ago.
Can May 2016 please hurry up?
